A few comments, all of them are just my opinions of course.

- Believing strongly in anything is never a sign of good intelligence. Also, this quote:

is just selfishness. Your friend is buying himself the euphoric feeling that we get when we help someone in need. Its not in the genuine interest of patients' welfare that he does what he does. This is just human nature. We are not altruistic, even if some of our actions look like they are. everything has a price, be it monetary, emotional, etc.

I bet the patient suing your friend does not even think he helped her (people can convince themselves of anything if they try hard enough).

- I would argue that the only goal in life is to be happy, and one can live a perfectly happy life without studying or knowing anything. Happiness is all in the mind. We trick ourselves into thinking that there is more to life than eating, sleeping, playing, or engaging in carnal activities. Well, there isn't. And I have been a student for the past 27 years, so I definitely have nothing against education.

- our tribal nature. people still kill each other for belonging to the 'wrong' tribe. men abuse women, religion A abuses religion B and if B does not exist then A divides itself into two groups that despise each other. and we talk about goals and dreams and helping other people. give me a break.

sorry if i sound too cynical. its just who i am. a few years ago i would be inspired to jump and reach the heavens by people like your friend. now they just disgust me.

This message comes to you from my couch while listening to the new pornographers. cheers.

Probably you wouldn't be able to review my reply back but I will reply anyway to keep my promise.

first of all, selfishness is usually defined as the concern with one's own interests regardless the interests of others. or in a sense being self centered, which I don't think that this was the case. If we defined selfishness as doing things for our own interest, don't you think that everthing we do is for the same reason? Patch Adams and Ghandi will be as selfish as Osama Ben Laden!!
I think that some people are much more self centered and value different things way more than the well being of others or caring to develop a win-win situation with others. This what I will define as selfish.

The patient actually was nice enough to admit that she needed the money, not that she believes he did her wrong and this is the bright side of the story :-)

you said that you would argue that the only goal in life is to be happy.
a goal in life to be miserable doesn't sound too appealing to me right now :-)

you said "our tribal nature. people still kill each other for belonging to the 'wrong' tribe. men abuse women, religion A abuses religion B and if B does not exist then A divides itself into two groups that despise each other." ....I can't agree more. unfortunately, you are exactly right

Thanks for the reply. A couple of points:

We differ in our definition of selfishness. Thats fine.

Well, if you too believe that the only goal in life is to be happy then maybe you should not be too shocked over the person who said that the only point is making money and that education is just one way to do that. Maybe I am off the mark here, I just felt that this was a condescending remark. Maybe I am wrong.

Have a good day! :)
